What is a fire risk assessment?
A fire risk assessment is a means of identifying and recording any fire risks that may be present in a building or premises, with a view to improving the level of fire safety and advising on how to create a safer environment for everyone in the unfortunate event of a fire.
Who is responsible for fire safety?
The law states that you are responsible for carrying out a fire risk assessment and fire management plan; if you own or manage a business premises, are an employer or self employed with a business premises, are responsible for part of a dwelling that is used for business purposes, a charity or voluntary organization, a contractor or managing agent of a building, or provide accommodation for paying guests.
Who should carry out a fire risk assessment?
The assessment should be carried out by “a competent person”- this person should have sufficient knowledge of fire safety and have undergone the relevant training. Normally a specialist would be employed to act as the “Competent person”, particularly in larger more complex buildings.
What does a fire risk assessment involve?
A fire risk assessment would involve a site visit to ascertain your current level of compliance. The assessor would follow the ‘5 Steps’ system (as outlined by the government), and as such, would identify any fire hazards, identify any persons at risk, evaluate the risks, provide a report outlining their findings, and advise you on how and when their findings would need to be reviewed.
